US pets: More cats or dogs? - Tween Tribune

U.S. pets: More cats or dogs?

The American Veterinary Medical Association has released its annual survey with statistics about pet ownership.

Vermont is the most pet-loving state. Almost 1 out of 4 (70.3 percent) homes in Vermont has a pet.

Vermont is followed New Mexico, South Dakota, Oregon, Maine, Washington, Arkansas, West Virginia and Idaho.

Rhode Island has the lowest percentage of households with a pet.

The survey found that more than 6 out of 10 pet owners consider their pets to be members of their families.

But do cats outnumber dogs, or vice versa? Cats outnumber dogs, but not by a large percentage. There are approximately 70 million pet dogs in the U.S. and 74.1 million pet cats.

Critical thinking challenge: Why are there more cats than dogs as pets?

Define this word: households
