Ex-Maryland man faces Guantanamo war crimes trial (AP)

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico ? A Pentagon legal official approved war crimes charges Wednesday for a Pakistani detainee at Guantanamo who is accused of joining al-Qaida and taking part in a series of post-Sept. 11 terror plots after spending much of his youth in Maryland.

Majid Khan, 31, faces up to life in prison if convicted of charges that include murder, attempted murder and providing material support for terrorism.

The Pentagon's Convening Authority approved the charges two days after they were filed by military prosecutors, a process that has taken months of review in the past. That approval means the prisoner must be arraigned within 30 days before a military judge at the U.S. base in Cuba. The date of the arraignment has not yet been announced.

Khan lived as a child in the suburbs of Baltimore, graduating from high school in 1999 and working at gas stations in the area owned by his family, but he is a citizen of Pakistan. Prosecutors say he joined al-Qaida on a trip to his homeland, working directly with senior members of the terrorist organization, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The military has accused Khan of plotting with Mohammed to blow up underground fuel tanks in the U.S. and scheming to assassinate then President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan. Khan also allegedly delivered $50,000 to help pay for the al-Qaida bombing of the J.W. Marriott hotel in Indonesia in August 2003, an attack that killed 11 people and wounded 81.

Khan was captured in March 2003 and held in a clandestine CIA prison, where his lawyers say he was tortured. He was transferred in September 2006 to Guantanamo, where he was with two of his lawyers, Wells Dixon and Katya Jestin, when he was served with the charges Monday.

"We are reviewing the charges, and will represent Majid throughout this process," Dixon and Jestin said in a statement. "Majid is doing well considering these challenging circumstances."

Car bomb kills 8 in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say a car bomb outside the northern city of Mosul has killed at least eight people.

A Mosul police official says the blast struck a Shiite district early Monday about 20 miles (30 kilometers) outside of the city, which is predominantly Sunni.

An official at Mosul's Al-Jomhouri hospital confirmed the death toll.

The bombing is the latest in a string of attacks that have killed more than 140 people since the U.S. withdrew its troops from the country last month.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

BEIJING (AP) ? The number of Internet users in China has surged past 500 million as millions of new Web surfers go online using mobile phones and tablet computers, an industry group reported Monday.

The popularity of the Internet in China has driven the explosive growth of profitable Web companies and made fortunes for some Chinese entrepreneurs despite government controls on what the public can see online.

The number of mainland Internet users rose to 513 million in December, up 12 percent from a year earlier, the government-sanctioned China Internet Network Information Center said.

Among them, the number who go online using handheld devices rose 17.5 percent over a year earlier to 356 million.

The popularity of wireless Internet was reflected Friday in a scramble by Chinese gadget fans and scalpers to buy Apple Inc.'s latest iPhone 4S, which sold out within hours of its China launch.

Angry customers shouted and threw eggs at Apple's flagship Beijing outlet after the company failed to open the store, citing the size of the crowd. Apple postponed further iPhone 4S sales at its mainland stores for safety reasons but said they will be sold online and through its local carrier, China Unicom Ltd.

The communist government encourages Internet use for business and education but tries to block access to material it deems pornographic or subversive.

The governnment is strengthening its control over popular microblogs after a bullet train crash last July that killed 40 people prompted an online outpouring of criticism of the official response.

Microblog services have been ordered to monitor postings content more closely and remove objectionable material, while news media were barred from reporting online material without firsthand verification.

Despite such controls, popular online services such as portals Sina.com and Sohu.com, video websites Youku.com and Tudou.com and search engine Baidu report growing traffic and revenues.

Outlets owned by the ruling Communist Party or by the government also have jumped into the market, launching their own search engines and other services.

On Friday, regulators approved an initial public stock offering by the online arm of the ruling party newspaper People's Daily, people.com, on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to raise 527 million yuan ($85 million).

COMMENTARY | OK, Greece, I read in a story by the Associated Press that you have recently decided to recognize kleptomaniacs, pyromaniacs and pedophiles as those deserving of disability payments. I can say that although I may understand your logic in deciding this, I must say that your logic fails to recognize one of its major flaws -- that although these things may be debilitating to those who suffer from it, these "disabilities" are much more debilitating for the victims than for the sufferers.

Victims otherwise known as the rest of your citizens and tourists. Let's be honest with each other, Greece, diabetes and organ transplant recipients aren't suffering from an illness that affects the lives of the rest of your citizens -- other than financially, that is. But these people, who suffer from these other mental illnesses, harm otherwise innocent people.

Greece, you have always been rather high my list of places to visit; your rich ancient history, gorgeous views, wonderful food (minus the tripe). This recent decision of yours, though, is seriously making me rethink my travel plans.

Tourism is a great moneymaker for your almost bankrupt country, and I don't really see how providing government subsidies to those who suffer from "illnesses" -- mental illnesses whose impulses sufferers are rarely able to stop acting upon -- will do much to help your economic situation.

I mean, sure, you can argue that now Greece will be a beacon for the pedophiles and pyromaniacs of the world, but perhaps this isn't the contingent of the population you'd really like to have tour Greece. As I said, I'd love to visit Greece. However, I don't think I'd like to visit Greece knowing that I'd have to tie my daughter to my arm, clutch my purse, and jump every time someone lights a match. I have a feeling that I'm not the only person who feels this way.

I understand that pedophiles and pyromaniacs are in every society, and they are an issue that all governments must deal with. Let me suggest a more palatable solution for all of us potential tourists: that you take all of the money you would hand out to these sufferers and instead, use the money to build a government run institution where they can reside without interacting with the public. Not only will you be helping these mentally ill people, but you will also be taking a stride to try and make Greece's streets safer for its citizens and tourists.

Greece, please keep in mind that diabetes patients or organ transplant recipients aren't suffering from an illness that affects the lives of the rest of your citizens -- other than financially, that is. But pedophiles, pyromaniacs, and kleptomaniacs harm otherwise innocent people. Really, Greece, as a civilized nation, do you really want to help keep free those people whose mental illnesses lead to criminal activity?
